Abstract (Document Summary)

The prize is not getting any easier to capture, [Lanny McDonald] is the first to admit. The Flames, who eliminated the Edmonton Oilers from last year's playoffs, began their best-of-seven Smythe Division semifinal against the Winnipeg Jets last night in Calgary.

The Flames finished second to Edmonton in the Smythe Division and third overall in the league. The Jets, third in the division, ranked sixth overall. But the Jets won six games against the Flames this season and lost only two, both at Calgary's Olympic Saddledome.

McDonald may be expecting a grinding Stanley Cup playoff series, but for Washington coach Bryan Murray, the entire season proceeded like sandpaper over chipped bark. It's been one long soap opera, complete with a bumpy, sometimes outrageous plot.
