Abstract (Document Summary)

Bauer plays the hero, Avner, leader of a crack revenge squad selected by Golda Meir and the Israeli Secret Service to avenge the massacre of the 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Avner is a real meaty role, Bauer is in every scene. This could be his biggest role since Manny Rivera in Brian De Palma's Scarface, his first feature movie and his acting breakthrough. He subsequently starred in Thief Of Hearts and co-starred with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines in Running Scared. 'First choice'

"I was the first guy they saw for the role of Manny and their first choice. And then I had to hold onto that for about four months. I turned down the lead in another film, while waiting with no guarantee. A Don Shebib film called Running Brave, which Robby Benson did. It was mine, the Indians even liked me. Don went nuts. He called me in the middle of the night and said, 'You're never gonna get Scarface. You're blowing this great thing here. You're being duped. At the last minute, they're gonna go with John Travolta!' "
