Abstract (Document Summary)

MOSCOW (Reuter-AP) - The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station cost the Soviet Union $4 billion in losses and damage, Finance Minister Boris Gostyev said yesterday.

That figure included direct damage to the station's fourth reactor, which caught fire in April, losses in electrical power, losses in agricultural and industrial output and money needed to compensate Chernobyl evacuees, Gostyev told a news conference.

[Gostev] also revealed the Soviet Union had bought food from East Euopean countries that had been banned in the West because of the accident.
