"It totally depends on the horse's breeding and over-all racing record," says David Willmot of Kinghaven Farms, whose Steady Growth captured the 1979 Queen's Plate. "Winning the Plate isn't enough make a horse worth a lot of money."

"Of course, a Queen's Plate win does improve the value of a horse," said Willmot, who keeps a sharp eye on the thoroughbred market. "But that value escalates many more times for a well-bred horse."

"After the Plate, he won the Arlington Classic (in Chicago) and was second to Coastal in the Monmouth Invitation," Willmot said. "We turned down $800,000 for him in August of 1979.
