Legend, for his part, made good on three of his nominations with a best R&B album statuette before the telecast, a male R&B vocal performance Grammy for "Ordinary People" and a best new artist trophy late in the evening. West also pulled three awards, landing best rap solo performance, best rap album for Late Registration and best rap song. Hamilton-bred two-time nominee Daniel Lanois missed out on a production award (ironically, for the U2 record) and lost an instrumental pop album nod for his Belladonna to Burt Bacharach. Neil Young's Prairie Wind was a sentimental choice for best rock album, given the Winnipeg expat's recent brush with a near-fatal aneurysm.
