 Abstract (Document Summary)

It seems to me that, as of late, there have been a number of letters written advocating the "separation of church and state" here in Canada. I feel the need to write to you to point out that in Canada there is no such thing as a "separation between church and state."

First of all, the term "separation between church and state" is an American one. It originates from the 1st Amendment to their Constitution whereby Congress is forbidden from making any law concerning "an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Given that the writers of the Declaration of Independence refer to "God" and "Creator," I highly doubt the 1st Amendment means that church and state are to be "separate" in the manner that a number of letter writers have suggested.
