After being passed over six times, [Robert J. Sawyer] captured the award for best novel for his 2002 work Hominids at the 50th anniversary [Hugo Gernsback] science fiction awards held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The ceremonies were part of the society's annual convention, being held in TorontoRoughly 4,000 people registered for the event, which is showcasing Canadian science fiction. Other award winners included Neil Gaiman's Coraline (best novella); Michael Swanwick's "Slow Life" (best novelette); Geoffrey A. Landis' "Falling Onto Mars" (best short story); Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode "Conversations with Dead People" (best dramatic presentation, short form); The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (best dramatic presentation, long form); Gardner Dozois (best professional editor); Bob Eggleton (best professional artist); Locus (best semiprozine); Mimosa (best fanzine); Dave Langford (best fan writer), and Sue Mason (best fan artist).
