He said the last two years have seen a "180-degree turn" with the arrival of Denis Davila, a former Hamiltonian who runs Miss Universe Canada. Davila's able to devote lots of time to the $1-million event, his attendance is solid, with sell-out crowds of 5,100 Friday and Sunday, and he wants to change what a Canadian beauty pageant represents. "The impression people had of a beauty pageant was of a pretty face and an empty head," said Davila, noting [Venessa Fisher] will speak in schools about confidence and, later, HIV/AIDS. Davila wants to end save-the-world speeches, frumpy fashions and the notion winners are different than the rest.
