[Stewart Smith] was a dedicated Communist for many years and a former Toronto alderman and controller. Mr. Smith was a member of the national executive of the Communist party and acting leader during the 1930s when the leadership was in jail. When the Communist party was outlawed during World War II it was replaced by the Labor Progressive Party and Mr. Smith was Ontario leader for some years.
