NEW YORK (AP) - NBC, with its rousing Cheers finale, won its ninth consecutive May ratings sweeps in the United States, but ABC claimed second place based on the strong showing by its Daytime Emmy awards telecast. Its Cheers finale was NBC's highest-rated and TV's second highest- rated episode telecast ever, averaging a 45.5 Nielsen rating and attracting more than 93 million viewers. Only 1983's M*A*S*H finale drew more, 121.6 million. ABC, however, was quick to point out that subtracting the ratings for May 20, when NBC aired the grand finale of Cheers, its top- rated sitcom, both ABC and NBC would have averaged an 11.5 rating for the May sweeps.
