 Abstract (Document Summary)

[Stanley Turecki] explains that [Justin]'s behavior is normal for the type of child he is, and can be kept within acceptable limits with reasonable rules and discipline. His mother can learn not to be frightened of his wild fantasies, but to use her own excellent imagination to share his imaginings and improve their relationship.

As in the case of Justin and his mother, many problems are rooted in a mismatch between the natural personalities of the child and the important adults around him, Turecki maintains. When parents can step back and evaluate what kind of person the child is, then concentrate on the child's strengths and talents instead of on problems and weaknesses, many problems melt away.

There are times when a parent needs to seek professional help, Turecki says. These include situations when a child displays bizarre behavior such as seeing or hearing things that aren't there, or thinking he can fly. Sometimes a child has such severe anxiety to ordinary occasions such as going to school that he or she becomes panicky and cries uncontrollably. Dangerous behavior or suicidal talk or behavior also warrants professional help.
