Kitchener, Ont.
(CP) - Tom Rideout says he's resigning as Newfoundland's Conservative leader because the party stands a better chance of winning the next election with someone new. A fisherman's son, Rideout rose from backbencher to cabinet minister to party leader and premier in March 1989 after former Tory leader Brian Peckford resigned. Rideout's political fortunes have lagged since. The last blow was a crushing third-place showing by the Conservative candidate in a December byelection in a former Tory stronghold. New Democrat Jack Harris won handily. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction or distribution is prohibited without permission.
