Villeneuve races to victory: Race car driver tops sprinter for yearly honors

Villeneuve collected 70 of 142 first-place votes and a total of 280 points, while [Donovan Bailey] received 48 first-place votes and 250 points. Figure-skater Elvis Stojko was third with 14 first-place votes and 146 points. Villeneuve spent just two seasons on the IndyCar circuit, winning rookie-of-the-year honors in '94. He said that success gave him plenty of confidence going into the 1995 season. "I knew that was going to be a year where it could happen. . . . From the first race, we were fighting with the leaders." IndyCar Career: Won five IndyCar races in his two seasons on the circuit. Named top rookie in 1994.
