Abstract (Document Summary)

[Ferguson] said he does not foresee that widening the 401 will help change Kitchener and Cambridge into bedroom communities for Toronto. "I just don't see that expanding to six lanes as a determining factor in people's judgment of whether they want to live in this community as opposed to Toronto."

Staff Sgt. Al Smouter of Milton OPP said he welcomes the project because it will ease a "bottleneck" that exists where the 401 narrows from six lanes to four near the Kelso conservation area, a zone of numerous accidents. "Most certainly it will stimulate traffic flow. It's a real bottleneck of congestion."

The 33-km section of Highway 401 between Cambridge and Milton will be built in four stages. The contract for the first 8.2-km section between Highway 25 in Milton and Halton Regional Road 1 will be awarded in April and construction will start by early summer.
