Peugeot is using the Paris auto show, which opened Oct. 2, as a launchpad for its new Citroen AX compact car, which has been designed to compete with the Renault 5, Volkswagen Polo and Opel Corsa. The company hopes the car will secure 6 per cent of the French car market next year. The financial outlook at Peugeot's major rival, Renault, while much improved, remains clouded by its huge debt, which chairman Georges Besse said had reached 62 billion francs ($9.4 billion U.S.).
