HARRISTON - Ontario's nursing-home system is a "disgrace," say members of a watchdog group that wants better care for residents in provincial nursing homes. Ontario gives homes for the aged $70 to $80 a day per patient, and provincial nursing homes receive $49.16 a day. Most of the other provinces offer nursing homes funding of $60 to $70 a day. "As a registered nurse I could not even do a safe assessment of the health-care needs of a resident in three-quarters of an hour," said [Dorothy Hall], who also advocates supplemental education for registered nurses who work in nursing homes.
