 Judge orders prostitutes to be tested for AIDS

"There are certain facts the court wishes to have before it. You must be aware of the tremendous problems involved with AIDS and more traditional sexually transmitted diseases," [William Ross] said. Lawyer Peter Maloney, a directors of Maggies, a self-help organization for prostitutes, told the Star's Damien Cox Provincial Court judges have "no jurisdiction" to order blood tests on prostitutes to determine if they have AIDS or other communicable diseases. Lorraine Greaves, vice-president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, called Ross' order for tests "terribly unfair."
