The U.S. Conference of Mayors, which surveyed 73 of the largest school districts, found 54 per cent had already begun providing some form of AIDS education. A few districts with large numbers of AIDS cases have comprehensive programs, including teacher-training, curriculum guides and information on safer sexual practices. Most other districts incorporated AIDS information into existing sex or health education classes. In Ontario, where education ministry regulations require teaching students about sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS instructions will be included in new guidelines. Both the Toronto and North York boards of education have been giving information on AIDS in health classes, particularly trying to uproot myths about the disease. Some high schools have invited speakers to talk to students. [Everett Koop] became involved in the AIDS question in February, 1986, when [Ronald Reagan] visited the public health department and in an ad-lib to his speech, said Koop should report on AIDS to the American people.
