In October, playing in Edmonton against his former Oilers teammates, [Wayne Gretzky] earned a first-period assist to tie Gordie Howe's all-time points mark of 1,850 points. In his inimitable way, Gretzky broke the record with a late goal to force overtime and scored in sudden death to lift the Kings to victory. Gretzky helped his Los Angeles Kings overcome a 3-1 deficit in games in the Smythe Division semifinals in April, to oust the defending Stanley Cup-champion Edmonton Oilers. The Kings were then eliminated in four games by the Calgary Flames, who went on to capture the Stanley Cup. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
