The $185 million project will see the 401 widened to a 12-lane core-collector system from Neilson Rd. in Scarborough to Brock Rd. in Pickering. The 401 expansion was originally scheduled to be completed in the year 2000. But [Gary Herrema] complained the current six-lane system can't handle east Metro's burgeoning population. In addition to accelerating the 401 construction, the province has budgeted for expansion of Highway 407, a six-lane freeway that will eventually form an alternative to Highway 401, north of Metro.
