Kurt Browning has been named Canada's male athlete of the year for the second time in a row in a Canadian Press poll of sportswriters and broadcasters. Browning, who has won the men's world figure skating championship three years in a row, is taking a Christmas break at home in Caroline, Alta., before beginning final training for a run at the Olympic gold medal in Albertville, France, in February. Nine men received at least one first-place vote: Browning, [Michael Smith], [Eric Lindros], freestyle skier Philippe LaRoche, tennis player Grant Connell and hockey players Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Ed Belfour and Bill Ranford.
