 Abstract (Document Summary)

Although the recession has slowed its growth, Greenpeace Canada expects to raise $12 million this year, compared with just $1.2 million in 1986. And in the past five years, its membership has swelled to more than 325,000 from 39,000. It's larger than any Canadian political party, says executive director Michael Manolson.

The Persian Gulf war showed Greenpeace hasn't sold out to anyone, Manolson says. The group came out in strong opposition to the war. As a result, U.S. membership and donations dropped sharply.

File photos: Paul Cote and [Jim Bohlen] with boat Grrenpeace, 1971; Greenpeace duels with Soviet whaler; protest in Antarct; Brigitte Bardot; sinking of Rainbow Warrior.
