OTTAWA - The University of Toronto's position as Canada's No. 1 research institution will be more firmly entrenched today with the announcement it would receive the lion's share of $72.7 million in new medical research grants.

The announcement was to be made this morning at the university by Health Minister Allan Rock and University of Toronto president Robert Prichard. The university is to receive $40.4 million of the federal grants.

The 395 research grants will include projects involving HIV/ AIDS, biomedics, lung disease, vascular disease, menopause, arthritis, cardiology, fetal health and degenerative motor disorders.
