For a mere $16 million (U.S.), Trinidad & Tobago bought the blessing of pageant co-owner Donald Trump to host the 48th Miss Universe contest, 'the combination of beauty and intelligence which defines the beginning of the 21st century' "This is the greatest achievement of our people," says Prime Minister Basdeo Panday. He wooed Trump on a Westchester, Conn., golf course last fall, courted him in New York City and, at last, won the rights to the pageant over dinner at Le Cirque, one of Trump's favourite Manhattan restaurants. Le Cirque owner Sirio Maccioni is also a pageant judge. The pageant began in 1952 as a bathing suit promotion. Trump bought it in 1997. It's the most important pageant in the world, according to Trump. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction or distribution is prohibited without permission.
