The Metro Toronto Zoo has been fined $43,000 in connection with a 1994 monorail train crash in its Canadian Animal Domain that left 27 people injured. The zoo pleaded not guilty to a single charge of violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act but presented no evidence, said Toby Styles, the zoo's executive director of marketing and communications. During the brief trial, evidence presented by the crown indicated the monorail's driver was inadequately trained to handle the ``unusual situation'' that developed on the day of the accident, July 11.
