Nashville-based Country Music Television, known as CMT, and Canada's New Country Network reached agreement in Ottawa yesterday on a joint venture. CMT's American owners will buy 20 per cent of the Canadian network from Rogers Communication Inc. and rename it Country Music Television - Canada. No details of the sale were released. The American channel had been singing the blues ever since it was forced off the Canadian airwaves - and out of two million homes - more than a year ago when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ordered cable companies to drop CMT after the Canadian network came on air. CMT alleged the action violated parts of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
