Big Ben wins race for top male athlete prize

[Ben Johnson]'s record performance in the 100 metres at the world track and field championships in Rome - a goal he has been pursuing since he became the world's top sprinter in 1985 - assured him of his second straight Lionel Conacher Trophy. "I don't hate him," Johnson said of the flamboyant American. "I like to talk to the guy, but the guy's just ignorant." In the CP poll Johnson received 98 first-place votes, 13 second and no thirds for 320 points, based on a 3-2-1 point system. [Wayne Gretzky], who led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup and won the NHL's scoring title for a seventh consecutive year, was next with 116.5 points, including eight first-place votes.
