Toronto, Ont.
It filed documents in a Montreal court yesterday saying it wants to strip Ladislaus Csizsik-Csatary, 82, and Valdimer Katriuk, 75, of their citizenship for lying about their wartime records. Csizsik-Csatary, who moved to Toronto from Montreal three weeks ago, is alleged to have been a member of the Royal Hungarian Police in Kassa, Hungary. The government alleges that, in 1944, Csizsik-Csatary helped round up thousands of Jews to be sent to Nazi death camps but, when he arrived in Canada in 1949 under the last name of Csizsik, he told immigration officials he was a Yugoslav national.
