"Had I had a sense that things were going to be okay, then I could make a four-year commitment. But I really can't do that." The 67-year-old [Don Cousens], who was first elected in 1994, suffers from polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder resulting in reduced kidney function and, ultimately, kidney failure. He received a kidney in 2002, but it failed because of complications, forcing him to rely on dialysis. It's not that Cousens won't find enough to do between his thrice- weekly dialysis. Among other things, he is the chair of the board for World Vision in Canada and is looking forward to spending more time with his grandkids living in Unionville.
