"The goal is to have kids realize math is fun, and interesting, and useful and practical," said Troy Vasiga, associate director of UW's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing.

It's important to instil a love of math in students, say [Ian VanderBurgh] and Vasiga, because math is like sports or music.

Gambia's a good place to start, because it is free of civil strife, people speak English there and "it's a place we could have an impact, a measurable impact," because it is so small, VanderBurgh said.
