Abstract (Document Summary)

"[Bill Gates] is so famous," [Joanne Toporowski] said. "It's kind of cool to be able to see and experience just what he's like firsthand, and not have to read it in a book.

She likes the math competitions, offered by UW's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing, because they allow her to see how her math skills "connect like a big web."

When Gates arrives on campus around 8 a.m., he'll be greeted by UW president David Johnston, UW chancellor Mike Lazaridis, who is also founder, president and co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion, math dean Thomas Coleman and other UW officials.
