Abstract (Document Summary)

"Every KDSL team has its own (cultural) background. That's what makes the games so competitive and exciting. People get so emotional," Sokmez said of the 23-team, two-division KDSL.

The team features some of the league's best young players, including: midfielder Afrim Ficic, who scored seven goals for the Turks but has now departed for West Virginia's Wesleyan College in Buckhannon; striker Ed Sams, a former Hrvat-A goalie; team captain Everton Barnes, who has played just about every position for the Turks, except goalie; and teenage phenom Erkan Hussein of Bluevale Collegiate.

Offsides: More than a few KDSL watchers are whispering about second-place Oriental-A (14-6-1). With a deep bench, the Portuguese club is expected to make some noise through the playoffs . . . Hrvat- A's Andy Papa (19 goals) and Beograd-B's Feda Custovic (19 goals) appear to have their respective Premier and First Division's goal- scoring derbies locked up . . . The regular-season finale between Oriental-A and third-place Polish Eagles on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Kitchener's Woodside Park could determine which of the two teams gets a first-round playoff bye.
