When the Rockets selected 7-foot-6 Chinese superstar Yao Ming, [Nelson Luis], the Rockets' 5-foot-8 director of media relations, embarked on a roller-coaster ride that hasn't slowed.
Take NBA All-Star Weekend, where Yao started at center for the Western Conference. The van taking Luis, Yao and several others to Phillips Arena broke down, leaving them stranded on the side of a busy Atlanta highway.
While Luis hasn't mastered Mandarin, Yao's native language, the two haven't had trouble communicating. Yao has a good command of English and he has an interpreter in case they have to discuss anything complicated, Luis said.
