Abstract (Document Summary)

In her years with the animal rescue organization, [Joanne Schoch] has heard more than her share of abandoned pet stories. But when it comes to pet rabbits, Schoch worries more about the calls she doesn't get.

According to the House Rabbit Society, a national organization devoted to rescuing pet rabbits, 90 percent of all pet rabbits end up killed, crippled or abandoned. Though Schoch agrees that rabbits can make good pets, she fears for animals whose owners don't want to invest the time and effort into their proper care.

Hernando County rabbit breeder Dee Blaha agrees that rabbit owners need adequate knowledge of their animal before making the plunge. Blaha and her husband, Mike, own Rabbits, Etc., a small organic farm in Masaryktown that specializes in New Zealand white rabbits.
