Crime is up almost 17 percent in Hernando County for the first half of 2000, the biggest increase in a decade. And wouldn't you know, it happens to be an election year with three contenders - two who work at the Sheriff's Office - fighting to replace Tom Mylander as sheriff.
The result has Democratic sheriff's candidate Sgt. James "Eddie" McConnell and retired law enforcement officer Michael Robinson questioning some specific policy decisions of current Sheriff Tom Mylander and the man Mylander wants to replace him following his retirement - Maj. Richard Nugent.
The fact that Hernando crime statistics have changed little over the past decade is proof that the Sheriff's Office is doing its job, Nugent said.
