When it comes to songwriting, Darden Smith looks to his heart, where he says he is seldom failed. It's also how he measures his success.
"I think that all songwriters attempt to write from their heart," said Smith in a phone interview this week. "But we often try to manipulate the process. I've learned to work with it in its own terms, and not be afraid of exploring personal aspects. And when I'm finished, and I know that I've spoken from my heart, I consider that a victory."
How can one argue with Smith? He's considered one of the more notables of the Texas songwriter legion, which includes celebrated tunesmiths such as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Lyle Lovett. Smith enjoys the company, even if he maintains a lower profile.
