Abstract (Document Summary)

Souvenir: Music for Recorder and Lute/Guitar; Michala Petri, recorder; Lars Hannibal, guitar/lute (RCA ) - Michala Petri is one of the world's great musicians, rescuing the recorder from obscurity and developing a devoted following. The Danish virtuoso is at her dazzling best in baroque works such as Telemann's Sonata in D minor for recorder and continuo and Bach's solo Partita, both on this disk. Of course, not every baroque work can be saved by Petri. Vivaldi's Sonata in G is brilliantly boring, with one perfect note after another, as if stamped out on an assembly line. Neel's Dances, an ambitious work by Thomas Koppel of the Danish rock band Savage Rose, opens with assertive, atonal lute chords and closes with a frisky movement titled In a Symphony of Galloping Hooves. What distinguishes Petri is her rare combination of spectacular technique and a musical personality that communicates joie de vivre like nobody else. In previous recordings she teamed up with Keith Jarrett on Bach and Handel sonatas; here her partner is fellow Dane Lars Hannibal. - John Fleming POP & ROCK
