Abstract (Document Summary)

Cults like the one accused of running a global child-sex network are an expected, if unfortunate, outgrowth of the development of religion and not likely to harm mainstream faiths, experts believe.

"All religion started as a cult," said Ephraim Isaac, a Yemenite-Ethiopian Jewish leader who directs the Institute of Semitic Studies in Princeton, N.J.

"It is not so much the cult itself that is tarnishing the image of religion, but it is the activities of some of these recent cults that have manifested themselves in the name of religious violence, extremism and even satanism," he added.
