During Sunday's final round of the U.S. Open from Pebble Beach, Calif., [Brent] Musburger, who is the host of ABC's golf coverage, opened the telecast by describing the up-and-down play of then-leader Gil Morgan.
"Perhaps Indiana Jones could have warned Morgan about . . . the cliffs of doom. . . Like the Amen Corner at the Masters, Pebble Beach slaps you around with the cliffs of doom," Musburger said. "The great lady is ready . . . haunting cliffs of doom await their next unsuspecting victim."
Musburger, who covered the Masters for six years at CBS and has hosted golf at ABC for six months, has been criticized sharply in the past for dramatizing a sport not known for its theatrics. Sunday, once again, Musburger opted for style over substance.
