Claire Porter calls her solo character sketches Portables, which is both a slight pun on her name and a description of the works. Combining dance, mime and comedy, they can be performed in a limited space and don't require much in the way of props.
"I'm bringing the costumes, and the props are going to be found there," Porter says, speaking from her home in Teaneck, N.J. "All the props I need are two stools and a table and a chair."
Porter, a guest choreographer in the Florida Dance Festival, is comfortable with being called a performance artist "because I use text in the pieces," she says. "It's trying to stretch out the limits of dance."
