Abstract (Document Summary)

In a surprise announcement this week, Paul Homan was named chief executive officer of First Florida's parent company and Tom Rankin was named the chairman of the board's executive committee.

The affable, Harvard-educated Thayer landed at the top of First Florida in 1983, 14 years after his marriage to Stella Ferguson Thayer and his entree into the publicity-shy Lykes family of Tampa - one-third owners of First Florida.

The bank ambled profitably along until late last year, when it reported its first loss in more than 28 years. Since then, the Lykes family has become more involved with First Florida in an effort to get its investment back in the black and delivering a return.
