MIAMI - A member of the vice president's task force on drugs and a former officer involved in the police beating that sparked the worst riot in Miami's history are both under arrest, charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine.
Veteran Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Jorge Villar and ex-police officer Alex Marrero, a former bodyguard for singer Julio Iglesias, face a minimum of 10 years each in prison if convicted, U.S. Attorney Dexter Lehtinen said at a news conference Monday.
Lehtinen said the men offered to protect a cocaine shipment being smuggled from the Bahamas into South Florida. Their fee, Lehtinen said, was $300,000. Unfortunately for them, Lehtinen said, their client was an undercover informant.
