ST. PETERSBURG - The St. Petersburg Cardinals and the Tampa Tarpons, two area Florida State League baseball teams, had contrasting reactions Friday to the news of the White Sox staying in Chicago.
Had the American League team decided to come to St. Petersburg, the two independently owned Class A teams would have been forced to sell their territorial rights to the White Sox. The Dunedin Blue Jays and the Clearwater Phillies, the area's other minor-league teams, would have been uneffected by the White Sox move.
A Cardinals official said he was ``happy`` the team wouldn't have to move, while a Tarpons official said his club never expected the White Sox to come. Both officials said they stayed up late Thursday night to get the news.
