Abstract (Document Summary)

So while the early rounds were being conducted Sunday, [Monte] Robbins wasn't waiting by the phone. He made a four-hour round trip from his home in Great Bend, Kan., to drop off his girlfriend at the airport in Wichita.

After all, he's a punter. Punters and placekickers aren't picked in the early rounds. Robbins, who punted at the University of Michigan, figured there was little doubt he'd be chosen on the second day, if at all.

The Washington Redskins took a placekicker, Chip Lohmiller, at the end of the second round. Two punters went in the third, and one more in the fourth, and five minutes after Robbins got home the phone rang. The caller was Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Ray Perkins, who had just chosen Robbins late in the fourth round.
