Former Alabama Gov. Fob James, twice defeated as a Democrat, won the Republican gubernatorial nomination Tuesday and stopped the historic run by state Sen. Ann Bedsole.
In Mississippi, former state Sen. Ken Harper defeated lawyer Hiram Eastland in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
In the Alabama race, with 83 percent of the votes in, James had 62 percent to Bedsole's 38 percent. James will face Democratic Gov. Jim Folsom on Nov. 8.
