A `BANNER' DAY // (BUT NOT FOR SOME)

Abstract (Document Summary)

Before any passes were thrown or quarterbacks sacked during the Super Bowl in Tampa Stadium, pop star Whitney Houston gave a knockout performance of The Star-Spangled Banner. It has been replayed on countless radio and television stations across the nation and inspired fans to clamor for a recorded release.

Few people noticed and fewer have mentioned that Tampa Bay's own Florida Orchestra and music director Jahja Ling [Yah] accompanied Houston's stirring rendition. Now, Arista Records has announced that it will release a cassette single of the anthem and follow it up with a video. Arista said that any proceeds will be donated to a war-related charity of Houston's choosing.

Both Houston and the orchestra recorded the music before the game. Although some people have speculated that Houston lip synced the National Anthem at the game, representatives of Arista said she sang it live. A spokeswoman for the orchestra said she was not sure if either Houston or the musicians were heard live.
