Abstract (Document Summary)

Police arrested six suspected leftist rebels involved in the nine-day kidnapping of Colombia's presidential press secretary and a journalist, authorities said Wednesday.

The six members of the Jaime Bateman Cayon rebel band were captured during a surprise raid Tuesday in Rovira, 80 miles west of Bogota, and brought to the capital, said national police chief Gen. Rosso Jos Serrano.

The men are accused of kidnapping press secretary William Parra and RCN radio journalist Luis Maldonado on Dec. 4 shortly after they left the presidential palace.
