Abstract (Document Summary)

In 1984, he formed [Adalberto Alvarez] y su son, the group he leads today. The band's 1999 release, Jugando Con Candela (Playing With Fire) on Havana Caliente records, a subsidiary of Atlantic, is a good example of how Alvarez invigorates Cuba's venerable genre. By adding electric keyboard, a brassy sound, rap and touches of reggae, he has given son enough new life to attract new fans.
