[Dagoberto Valdes Hernandez]' work at preparing for democracy has not come without cost. Six years ago his bosses at El Yaguin de Siete Matas, a large tobacco farm where he works, told him he had to decide between the center and his job. When he chose the center, his employer demoted him from agricultural engineer to tractor driver, Valdes said. Since May 2, 1996, Valdes has been part of a crew that picks up palm leaves that are used to bind tobacco.
