The New York Mets acquired second baseman Tim Teufel from the Minnesota Twins Thursday in a five-player deal completed after they had dealt catcher Ronn Reynolds and right-handed pitcher Jeff Bittiger to Philadelphia in a four-player trade. In exchange for Teufel and minor-league outfielder Pat Crosby, the Mets sent outfielder Billy Beane, left-handed pitcher Bill Latham and minor- league pitcher Joe Klink to the Twins. Teufel, a right-handed hitter, batted .260 with 10 home runs and 50 runs batted in for Minnesota last season. In exchange for Reynolds and Bittiger, New York received minor-league right-handed pitcher Rodger Cole and minor-league first baseman Ronnie Gideon from the Phillies. The Mets signed Davey Johnson to a three-year contract Wednesday to remain as their manager. No mention of money was made, but it was believed he received a substantial raise that will bring him near $200,000 a year... The Detroit Tigers traded infielder Chris Pittaro and outfielder Alex Sanchez to the Twins in exchange for catcher Dave Engle. Engle, 29, is a five- year major league veteran with a lifetime batting average of .268. Engle batted .256 with seven home runs in 70 games last year. The Tigers also asked waivers for the unconditional release of catcher-infielder Marty Castillo. Castillo, 29, had been with the Tigers since 1981. He had seen limited action in the past season, batting .119 with two home runs and five RBI in 84 at- bats. If no team claims Castillo before he clears waivers, he's free to negotiate with any team.
